FORENSICS
We all love the shows like CSI, Law & Order, and Bones. Everyone gets entertained by a crime scene and the ways people solve murders. Alfred Hitchcock knew this about us and created the movie Rear Window.
Alfred Hitchcock stations his main character at the window of his apartment throughout the entire film, forcing him to observe others out of boredom. Jeffries watches his neighbors intently and comes to know their routines. Since he can’t speak with the people, he has to take every movement, object, motion and any other clues into account in order to understand their lives. Soon, a certain couple he observes gives him some trouble. Jeffries noticed from the start that tension existed between the couple. By observing body motion and facial expressions, he saw that the wife nagged the husband and he reacted with visible anger each time. The main clues that tipped Jeffries off to the murder were abnormalities in the couple’s routine. One night the man left with a breifcase in the rain. Jeffries was not awake when he returned but the next morning the wife was gone. He kept a closer watch on the man and saw objects that confirmed, in Jeffries’s mind, the wife had been murdered. Jeffries saw the man take a rope and knives out of a suitcase. The objects signified murder for Jeffries. He put the clues together and continued his stationary investigation of the man.
Forensics requires attention to every little detail. Jeffries took advantage of his injury and watched people constantly, seeing every detail of their daily lives. His close watch allowed him to notice the difference in the couple’s routine and therefore figure out the crime that occurred. The new show, Dexter, is about a blood-spatter specialist who works in a police station on the forensics team. In actuality, he is a serial killer but only murders bad guys the cops can’t get to. The show has many crime scenes and viewers watch Dexter analyze blood stains to help figure out the crime. The interesting aspect is how Dexter uses his knowledge to create perfect crime scenes for his murders and never gets caught. This is one shot from the show where Dexter creates his own crime scene. Pay attention to Dexter’s surroundings. He makes sure to cover the entire room as to not leave evidence and follows a killing ritual of showing the bad guys everyone they have hurt in their life.
